Can Google Photos be to picture storage what Gmail is to email?

Google Photos claims to be able to organize all your photographs just how you always wanted to for all these years. The company claims that it is going to be just like Gmail.

And just like Gmail revolutionized email in 2004, Google Photos is also going to be a huge game changer.

Google made this announcement last week and also said it was going to give free storage for unlimited videos and photos to all. All the way back in 2004, Gmail offered 1 GB of free data while others just offered a few options.

But it wasn’t the storage which made Gmail rise to the top and become so popular. They turned emails into threads and made it easier for you to search for just what you need.

Google Photos is quite similar as well. It will use computations to understand who, when, what, where, etc., of all your pictures. You will not have to tag or sort them at all. The biggest feature however will be the ability to find anything by searching for keywords.

There are many other services that offer unlimited photo storage for a small fee like Amazon Prime but they do not help in organizing the pictures in anyway. And don’t you wonder what happens to pictures if you stop paying for the subscription? Do you just lose everything? Well, with Google Photos, the advantage of being free and unlimited are more than enough to make it a best seller. And there is no doubt that people trust Google with their private data already right?

The only doubtful thing here is that Google admitted at the recently concluded Google I/O event that they have absolutely no idea of how they are going to monetize Google Photos.

It will be very hard to ignore the fact that Google is in the business of turning huge data streams into personalized services and advertising. This is what they are known for. But what happens if you’ve uploaded 300 GB of data to Google Photos and don’t like their latest privacy policy updates? Do you go through the trouble of downloading all your pictures and closing your account or will you just go ahead and let Google do what they want?
