According to the recent medical research, experts have reached to a new conclusion. Patients that are suffering with depression have a high risk of being a victim of Parkinson’s disease in coming days.

The study was conducted by researching through the data of about 140,000 people who suffered from depression between the years 1987-2012. Each of the patients was compared to three people of its age who is not suffering from depression. All the patients present in list were at least 50 years in age by the year 2005.

The investigators carried out the research very precisely. They observed each participant for sequential 26 years of his life. The final findings of the research show that 1% of depression patients developed Parkinson’s disease while 0.4% of people who had no depression developed the Parkinson’s disease.

The study clarifies that depression patients are not likely to develop Parkinson’s disease. A very small number of depression patients has to suffer from Parkinson’s disease.

“Parkinson’s disease results from a loss of the brain cells that produce the chemical dopamine. The condition affects body movements — it causes tremors, rigid muscles and impaired balance. About 1 million people in the U.S. have Parkinson’s”, said the Parkinson’s disease Foundation.

The new study suggests that people who suffer from depression are likely to get the Parkinson’s disease. People with depression have 3.2% more chances than normal people to be become the victim of Parkinson’s disease. This became more evident soon after the research commenced.

According to the researchers, it could also be that the drugs used to cure depression patients, such as antidepressants or antipsychotics, increase a person’s risk of being the victim of the Parkinson’s disease. Alternatively, the depression may be a symptom that precedes the manifestation of Parkinson’s disease.

This research was published in the Journal Neurology on 20th May.
