Floyd Mayweather was able to unanimously defeat Manny Pacquiao at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on the 2nd of May. All judges voted in his favor with Moretti scoring the fight 118-110 and both other judges, Clements and Feldman scoring it 116-112. Pacquiao was perhaps one of many who thought that he had won and was surprised to see the decision go the other way. There was a possible low blow from Mayweather during the fight as well, but the only thing that will be remembered in the history books is that Mayweather is now the unified welterweight champion of the world.
Unfortunately though, the sport of boxing needed Pacquiao to win to have any hope of surviving. In a world dominated by UFC and MMA, boxing is running a distant second and there is little that this match is going to do to change that. Much more was expected from this match in order to put boxing back on the map. And while both boxers are now at the ends of their respective careers, even if they had another couple of matches that were like this, it wouldn’t have made much of a difference.
It looks like it’s time for boxing to gracefully bow out from the scene. This one glorious night which got everyone in the world interested in boxing one last time is most probably going to be the last time anything of the sort happens. There may be two boxers that rise up to the occasion in the next decade or so and bring relevance back to the sport but until then boxing will have to be satisfied with a small presence on national television thanks to the NBC Sports. Mayweather has one more match in September this year. Will they be able to find him a worthy challenger once again?
