The authorities of California Polytechnic State University said, several people were injured when a roof collapsed during a St. Patrick`s Day party on Saturday morning.
The authorities also confirmed that thirty people were standing on the top of the roof when the accident took place. Authorities said, till now nine people had been taken to the nearby hospital for treatment. In a statement the San Luis Obispo fire department said, there were around 1,000 students who attended the party. The party was taking place at an off the campus housing near the university. According to the university authorities they have 20,000 students. According to the fire department, hospitals and university authorities, no one died during the collapse.
It was reported that, several thousand students gathered at the premises to mark the St. Patrick`s Day and most of them were wearing green. It was also confirmed that, the party began at Friday night and continued till Saturday morning catching the University and city officials’ off-guard.
Onlookers said, there were more than three dozen people standing on the roof when it caved in. Amateurs video showed that throughout the party people were screaming when the roof collapsed. In a statement hospital authorities said, most of the people were treated for small cuts and bruises. The most serious injury occurred when a when a piece of the collapsed roof pierced into a person’s thigh. They also confirmed that, there were no life threatening injuries.
In another statement Police Capt. Chris Staley said, three people were arrested for misdemeanors. He also admitted that the party caught them by surprise. In an interview with local newspaper he said, “This is completely unprecedented. We’ve never had anything like this”.
University officials said, they are working with the police and had opened their own investigation. They said if found guilty severe disciplinary action will be taken against the people who were involved.
In a statement the University spokesperson Matt Lazier said, since January all the schools fraternities and sororities were banned to organize any parties at the their own houses or anywhere because of sexual assaults reports from their previous parties. He said, “Once we have all the facts. The university will respond swiftly and accordingly”.
