7/11 rejoices 88th birthday by handing away free Slurpees to its fans

The well-known and vastly awaited Free Slurpee Day at 7/11 is making a comeback this Saturday, and this year the 88-year-old convenience store plans to celebrate it with even greater enthusiasm.

Each year, 7/11 rejoices its July 11 birthday by giving away loads of free Slurpee drinks to it consumers and fans throughout the country. Stores participating in the event will serve the drinks from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The much awaited celebration will commence from July 12 to 18 with its “7Rewards Week.” Customers will be receiving a free “7-Select” food or beverage item by purchasing any the 7-Eleven cup when they scan the 7-Eleven app. The free 7-Select coupon will automatically arrive on the “Scan and Save” section of the app.

The popularly widespread frozen treat arrived in 1965, when a 7-Eleven zone manager stopping by a store in Texas saw an Ice machine and snapped that it had great sales potential for 7-Eleven stores. Even though they were initially sold as “Icees,” the name ‘Slurpee’ was fashioned in May 1967.

Today on average, over 32 million Slurpee drinks are consumed every month, which is an average of more than 1 million each day. According to company officials, the iconic frozen carbonated drink was first presented during the year 1966. Since then it has expanded its flavor offerings ranging from the classic wild cherry to the new Sour Patch Watermelon.

Last year, Slurpee party consisted 8 million strong celebration. Sales teams expect it to be even bigger this year. In spite of all the millions of birthday Slurpee drinks given away for free, July is the biggest month of the year in terms of Slurpee sales.

The convenience store has been giving away free Slurpees on “7-Eleven” day since 2002. To add more to this massive event, 7-Eleven is affiliating with Sour Patch Kids in order to host a “Sour Patch Kids Slurpee Selfie Challenge.” Store authority announced that by uploading selfies enjoying Slurpees and Sour Patch Kids using the hashtag #spkslurpeeselfie, consumers and fans will be able to enter for a chance to win exclusive prizes.

7-Eleven is also going to add a Snapchat geo-filter for customers so that they can use it whenever they stopover a store.
