To the report from the sports world Andy Murray is testing out retired Swedish tennis player Jonas Bjorkman, with a view to adding the doubles specialist to his coaching team. This announcement has been awaited with interest since Murray admitted in Melbourne in January that he would need some extra help to augment the 25 weeks a year that Mauresmo has committed to. Jonas Bjorkman is to spend a trial week working with Andy Murray during the next month.
The source said Bjorkman will spend a week with Murray next month ahead of potentially joining the player’s coaching team on a permanent basis.
Since retiring from tennis in 2008, Bjorkman has been working at ATP tournaments in Bastad and Stockholm while also fulfilling roles in the media. Bjorkman also won nine grand slam doubles titles, including three successive Wimbledon crowns from 2002 to 2004.
Former World No. 1 in doubles Bjorkman exposed his excitement about the opportunity, writing on Instagram: “I’m super excited and I’m really looking forward to join @andymurray and his team for a test week, which we both hope will lead to joining the team permanently!
After losing the Aussie Open Murray said I feel that’s something I obviously need to get sorted so that when I get to the clay-court season I am not in that position, because I feel like there are some things I need to work on all the time and when I don’t have someone there it’s harder to do that.”
For that reason Murray now heads to California to finish the hard-court swing alongside Mauresmo and will be keen to have Bjorkman on his backroom staff as soon as possible to ensure that the Swede and Frenchwoman can work with each other ahead of a busy clay-court period.
