The word “weekend” automatically pops up memories of roller coaster rides and theatres and eating out with friends and loved ones. However, the Memorial Day weekend is all about honoring the lives of the U.S. soldiers who sacrificed themselves in the service of our country.
The annual Memorial Day Circle of Honor is being organized by the Veterans at Stanley Park in Westfield.
Even though the Memorial Day is not until Monday, veteran groups will start participating in an annual service on Saturday starting at 10:00 AM.
Memorial Day celebrations are a way to honor the true patriots, those who died serving our country in the military. Since 1971 this day itself became a national holiday, and has been celebrated annually on the last Monday of May ever since.
Robert Greenleaf being the only remaining survivor of the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941 will speak at Saturday’s service.
American Legion Whip City Memorial Post 454, the American Legion Post 124, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1847, Westfield Marine Corps League Detachment 141, and Vietnam Veterans Chapter 219 are amongst the few other Veterans organizations which will be participating in Saturday’s service.
