We all need to maintain a certain habits in order to be health and avoid any future medical problems. Many complications can occur when we stress out our body.
The report in Current Biology has put emphasis about the damaging impact of shift work on health.
Researchers have said that women with hereditary risks of breast cancer must not work on shift, although they have cautioned that more tests are required for further validation. It was also found from the data that the animals had 20% more weight regardless of eating the same quantity of food.
A much amplified risk of diseases like breast cancer in shift workers and flight attendants has been suggested by the studies. One of the factors is disrupting the internal rhythm or the body clock raising the level of risk substantially.
Nevertheless, the linkage is uncertain since the type of person working shift have higher chances of developing cancer because of factors such as social class, activity level or the amount of Vitamin D they get in their body.
The mice that had been vulnerable to developing breast cancer had their body clock delayed by 12 hours every week for a year. They had tumors after 50 weeks but with a disruptive sleeping pattern on a regular basis, the tumors emerged about 8 weeks ahead.
According to the report, “This is the first study that unequivocally shows a link between chronic light-dark inversions and breast cancer development.”
To interpret the consequences for humans are full-filled with complexity therefore the researchers have projected that the equivalent effect is most likely an extra 1st 8lb of body weight or for at-risk women having cancer about 5 years before they normally would have.
One of the researchers, Gijsbetus van der Horst, from the Erasmus University Medical Centre, in the Netherlands, said, “If you had a situation where a family is at risk for breast cancer, I would certainly advise those people not to work as a flight attendant or to do shift work.”
Dr Michael Hastings, from the UK’s Medical Research Council, said, “I consider this study to give the definitive experimental proof, in mouse models, that circadian [body clock]disruption can accelerate the development of breast cancer. The general public health message coming out of my area of work is shift work, particularly rotational shift work is a stress and therefore it has consequences. There are things people should be looking out for - pay more attention to your body weight, pay more attention to inspecting breasts, and employers should offer more in-work health checks. If we’re going to do it, then let’s keep an eye on people and inform them.”
