Police have informed that more than a dozen teenagers are being investigated for very serious sexual assaults against two LA high school students.
According to investigators, they believe that these assaults kept on taking place in a on and off basis starting from 2013 at Venice High School, Los Angeles police Cmdr Andrew Smith informed.
On Friday morning, 8 suspects were arrested at the school, where as the 9th suspect has been captured off campus. The tenth suspect has surrendered on Friday afternoon. The police are still looking for the rest of the 4 suspects.
“This is a painful moment for Venice High School and this district,” Los Angeles Unified interim Superintendent Ramon Cortines said, adding that crisis counselors would be positioned at the school to aid students to handle the situation.
Smith has said that some of the episodes were enforced sexual acts whereas others were consensual. But it is not justified as the students were too young to give consent to the harassers.
A majority of the attacks are considered to have taken place in recent times. Smith informed that the police have physical evidence of that, although he has refused to say that they were. According to the detectives, they students knew most of their suspected attackers.
“Incidents like this are a terrible tragedy,” Smith said. If there are any additional victims, he said, “We’d ask them to come forward.”
The former leader of Venice High School’s PTSA informed that she was completely oblivious to any of these issues at the school before the arrests were made.
“I’ve been part of the school for some time, I haven’t heard anything whispered even,” said Linda Patterson Salib, who was president of Venice High School’s PTSA until February. “So this comes as quite a surprise. It’s not like, ‘Oh we knew there was a problem.'”
