As Jeb Bush prolonged his support for a way to citizenship for some immigrants, immigration protesters cut him short by chanting “No hope without our vote!”
Republican presidential candidate was then pushed back by a dozen protesters who repeatedly jeered him Monday with that chant.
Bush was seen addressing a group of Hispanic business leaders in Houston Monday, flaunting his education record, tax strategy and backing for the “earned legal status” in a stump speech sprinkled with references to billionaire businessman Donald Trump. He stated in his speech that Trump was the one who led the turf of Republican presidential hopefuls in recent polls, and showed his support in erecting a wall at the Mexican border. He even talked about deporting nearly 11 million immigrants residing inside the United States, illegitimately.
While delivering his speech, Bush tried to make himself heard over the protesters in order to display his support for the children of undocumented immigrants, known as “DREAMers.” He spoke towards the audience at the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, “I think that the kids from Dream Act must have a path to citizenship…I’ve been consistent for it and I’ll keep being consistent, irrespective of what the political ramifications of that are.”
“We don’t need to construct a wall. We are also in no need of deporting anybody in this country (illegally),” stated Bush. “It’s not a practical conservative plan.”
However, Bush like many other Republicans on the presidential field does support the securing of the border before deciding to act on the millions of undocumented immigrants currently present in the U.S.
The Associated Press described that the Texas Organizing Project deliberately planned the protests which disrupted Bush during his speech. The communication director of the group, Mary Moreno stated that the protesters sought the attention of “the hostile atmosphere established by the GOP field of presidential candidates.” She also added that the Republican candidates wishes to “militarize the border” when it already consists thousands of border patrol agents on the southern border.
During his speech, Bush cited Donald Trump and went after the Republican frontrunner. He also stated that “My wife is an American by choice’” He emphatically shielded his wife, who in reality was born in Mexico, declaring, “My wife is American just as many people in this room are, and the idea that somehow she’s not, is laughable.”
Amid many, three of the signs which was held by the hecklers read: “Who is the real Jeb Bush?” “One of us?” “Or one of them?”
