Ridley Scott’s The Martian has not been released on Earth but it was already been released in space.
Astronauts in the orbiting lab, the International Space Station, got the special privilege of watching the advanced screening of the Matt Damon starrer The Martian this weekend.
The movie based on the novel written by Andy Weir, stars Matt Damon as the Martian who gets stuck up on Mars when their mission goes haywire. Damon’s crewmembers get killed and he gets stranded with little or no resources whatsoever to try and get back to Earth.
Astronauts Scott Kelly and Kjell Lindgren both shared photos of their crew members enjoying the film on a HD projector. “What a treat to watch The Martian while in space and see reflections of our own journey to Mars!” tweeted Lindgren.
Just a couple of weeks ago, both Lindgren and Kelly said that they were eagerly looking for the opportunity to watch the film after having thoroughly enjoyed Weir’s novel. Not only did the astronauts get a special personal screening of the movie, they even got a one-to-one with the lead Matt Damon last month. The celebrity actor visited NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a completely federally funded research and development center located in Pasadena, California, United States and had a chat with the astronauts on ISS then.
“That was a neat conversation. It was certainly fun for us,” commented Lindgren.
Kelly Scott is one of the two astronauts on the International Space Station who are part of NASA’s year-long mission to prep astronauts for the manned mission to the Red Planet by 2030.
Scott, who has successfully passed more than 50% of his training, tweeted, “Watched The Martian on the space station last night! Today working towards out journey to Mars during my year in space!”
The Martian is scheduled to premiere on planet Earth on October 2nd.
