The Police have reported that the cab driver was driving on a service road travel lane on the Grand Concourse when he hit a parked car. He has caused minor to the woman who had been driving it. He then jumped the curb and hit several pedestrians along the way.
This incident has taken place around 6:30 pm on Friday near the 170th street, near the Highbridge section of the Bronx killing a man and a 5-year-old girl and injuring two other people.
Authorities say 25-year-old Kadeem Brown was announced dead at the scene while 5-year-old Tierre Clark was declared dead at a hospital. A 55-year-old man is also hospitalized in critical condition and a 39-year-old woman is in stable condition.
These most recent deaths involving a taxi strike comes as Vision Zero, NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio’s road traffic safety initiative, enters its 2nd year in the city of New York.
It has been reported that there were several incidents in the past where drivers struck and have killed cyclists and pedestrians and yet did not receive any jail time or even reasonably minor punishments.
Just last year, during January, 9-year-old Cooper Stock was killed by a taxi as he was crossing an Upper West Side street with his father. The boy’s mother Dana Lerner was infuriated at the incompetent manner the case was handled by the DA, who has cited bad weather conditions as the reason for not pressing any charges against the driver.
“They told me there is nothing in the law right now that specifies that [he]can be charged with any crime,” Lerner said at the time. “The laws in New York State which say you can kill someone and not face any real consequences are appalling, and they need to be changed.”
