Train derailment in rural South Carolina, spilling ammonia nitrate – Nearby homes evacuated

Authorities have confirmed that the evacuation order has been lifted off for all except 4 homes subsequent to a 39-car train derailment in rural South Carolina on Friday night.

A public information officer, Derrick Becker, for the South Carolina Emergency Management Division has confirmed that no one has been injured following the crash which took place at 8:30 p.m. Friday in Trenton. Although, precautionary evacuations have been made nonetheless after receiving confirmation from officials that one of the Norfolk Southern tankers had been carrying anhydrous ammonia and one had been carrying ammonia nitrate, according to Becker.

A total of 15 cars had been derailed spilling ammonia nitrate all over scene, as posted on the South Carolina Emergency Management Division’s Twitter account. Aiken County Hazmat officials responded to the scene immediately and they have not detected any harmful spills, according to Becker.

The Edgefield county scene was being assisted by officials from Aiken County Hazmat.

An eyewitness confirmed WATG, that after hitting a tree which had fallen on the rail tracks, the train had derailed. The Officials were unable to confirm the cause of derailment immediately and the number of cars the train had all together.
