A little girl with leukemia “married” to her favorite nurse. The patient is a little girl named Abby and her favorite nurse is Matt Hickling. Abby is a leukemia patient in Melodies Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at AMC who has been undergoing treatment for some time. Abby was always the subject when Matt Hickling had something funny to share, it seems. And that, seemingly, initiated their love story. It was Abby who proposed Matt Hickling for marriage who accepted it straight away. Preparations were immediately started including the setting up of rose petals sprinkled on the corners of the hospital. It was the exact setup of middle Ages marriages of the prince and princess of the Royal kingdom. The wedding officiator was a doctor who handles Abby, namely Dr. Jennifer Pearce.
Abby ran to meet her charming prince, Matt Hickling in the middle of flower petals sprinkled everywhere on the floor. The scene almost seemed like a real marriage followed by the signatures of the hospital staffs on the marriage frame of Hickling-Abby as a wedding gift to them. Wedding rings and cakes were also part of the marriage and this made Abby felt happy in the midst of her fight against leukemia. The doctors declared that despite Abby’s conditions being deteriorated in some aspects, the prognosis was still improving. It is difficult to determine what might have happened to Abby, but at least in a psychological view, Abby’s situation is proving to be in a better state.
This marriage is one form of event that can be used to please the patients as long as possible. Based on few researches, in some cases, success in cancer treatment also depends on the patient’s psychological condition. What was done by Matt Hickling, Dr. Jennifer Pearce, and Abby’s mother is an attempt to improve the psychological condition of Abby who might have been shattered in learning that she was suffering to a disease that is incurable and fatal. The hospital staffs’ hope and faith were on seeing Abby always happy in the next years coming.
