The bad news for anyone who wants to lie on the sand beach is that they have to prepare themselves to live with fecal bacteria! Why? According to a report from the Natural Resources Defense Council, there are many beaches in the United States flooded by sewage, and the number reached 10 percent of total beach. The latest news says most of the waste consists of raw sewage. Officials in the health sector have been warned of the risk of disease associated with infection. Most of the diseases that can occur are gastrointestinal while other symptoms are a rash and hepatitis. Moreover, raw sewage can be derived from a variety of activities, such as food waste, human feces, and other organic waste. Usually, raw sewage is less harmful when compared with chemical waste, however raw sewage can cause serious problems that may not be realized.
Most people think that water is the largest transmission media but recently researchers found another fact that concludes sand as the biggest actor in the transmission. According to a recent study published by the journal Environmental Science & Technology, the disease-causing bacteria such as E. coli and Enterococcus, also C. perfringens have a higher ability to live if they are on the ground than if they are in the water. This study also concluded that the water does not become a major problem associated with the possibility of swallowing seawater. Many people considered that the water can be swallowed while the swallowing of sand possibility is very small. It was true but based on research; a habit of burying themselves in beach sand is more risky than the swallowing seawater. The key is the ability of bacteria living on the ground.
Although it may sound creepy, but the EPA ensures that diseases that might strike you is diseases that do not require serious treatment and you can avoid them by wearing shoes when walking on the beach. You can also lie on a pedestal that causes you to only get involved contact with sand beach in a very minimal amount. Key in the prevention of this problem is your ability to minimize direct contact with the sand that might already contaminated by various bacteria derived from raw sewage.
