A federal judge has recently ordered two of the New York municipalities of the Catskills foothills to encounter with a law suit regarding their act of showing discrimination against Hasidic Jews. The municipalities stopped these Hasidic Jews from moving in. Some of the recent updates also stated that this Tuesday, a judge ruled against a rural village and its surrounding area due to the discrimination against Hasidic Jews act. The Judge further stated that this rural village and the nearby town will face the penalty of $25 million because of the fact that they have prohibited Hasidic Jews from opening a bath in order to comply with their religious purification requirements and from completing a housing project.

U.S District Judge Hon. Katherine Forrest stated that the famous village of Sullivan County, Bloomingburg is bound to face claims as it has violated federal civil rights due to the fact that it has stopped the developer of 396 unit housing complex to complete its project. This village currently holds 400 residents and it is also likely to face the claim by violating the fair housing laws. This housing project has been marketed in Yiddish and English newspapers.

The honorable Judge claimed that the town of Mamakating is also going to face the charges because it stopped the conversion of a normal property into a Mikvah, a bath ritually used for the purposes of purification by the Jewish religion. Mamakating is known to be a town comprising 12000 people and geographically it includes the village of Bloomingburg.

Judge Forrest further ordered claims for the local officials of both the municipalities. This lawsuit sought almost $25 million excluding the other remedies.

Steven Engel, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, said: “We’re pleased that the court sustained our claims against the town and village, and we look forward to our day in court.”
