Google have officially opened their first campus in Asia, on Friday, to cultivate local startups.
The Seoul Campus in dazzling Gangnam district of South Korea will be Google Inc.’s first official attempt to train and help local talents flourish as this new campus will act as the community hub. The 2,000 square feet campus will offer potential entrepreneurs mentorship opportunities, co-working space, library and open spaces for networking and other facilities to get you in the groove to put your thinking cap on.
The first couple of weeks of test run in the Seoul Campus saw over visits from over a thousand entrepreneurs from over 28 countries and around 22 % of them were female, according to the latest stats released by Google.
The President of Google Asia Pacific, Karim Temsamani, commented that a lot of the recent local start ups could flourish to their true potential because of lack of resources, technical know-how and most importantly, the right connections. “We kept looking for an investment that could help all startups in South Korea grow their global ambition, their global connections, their global talent,” said Temsamani.
The Director of Google for Entrepreneurs, Mary Grove, stated that Seoul was the central location for a lot of Korean startups and the South Korean Capital witnessed incredible potential for innovation in the past couple of years. These are the primary reasons why tech giant chose Seoul to host its first campus in Asia, according to Grove.
The central policy making of South Korea is certainly forward thinking and is aligned with Google’s long term strategy to help shape future entrepreneurs. Geun-Hye, the President of South Korea, revealed a $ 3 billion (3.3 trillion won) fund to support innovative start ups in the next three years. South Korea already has facilities established in over 17 cities to foster creative economy & innovation. Most of these facilities are in collaboration with local giants such as Hyndai, SK and Samsung.
Google launched its first campus in London back in 2012. It then went to Tel Aviv, Israel, in December of 2012 to establish another campus. Google is looking forward to set up campuses in Sao Paulo and Warsaw in the near future.
