The role of Africa in the global production sector needs to be reviewed in the effort to truly realise the global sustainable development goals set by the United Nations, stressed President John Dramani Mahama.
He added that in order to reduce the number of young Africans migrating to European countries for work and a better standard of living, the world will need to seriously think about relocating more industries and production to Africa. President Mahama touched on these points at the end of the 3-day summit in New York, where the leaders of 193 United Nations member countries agreed to adopt the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. The summit was part of the 70th Session of the UN General Assembly meetings.
All the African leaders came to an unanimous agreement that in order to help realise all the 17-goal universal sustainable development agenda by 2030, the African economies needs to be given the adequate boost to be able to add value to the global economy.
President Barack Obama in his remarks said that he was delighted in the unanimous adoption of the SDGs by the member countries. It meant that the global community was setting aside scepticism to lift up the hope needed to encourage the global community to come together to fulfil the pledges.
President Obama went on to applaud the successes of achieving numerous targets of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), noting that the seemingly never-ending cycle of poverty could, in fact, be broken.
“But the task has not been finished, as some 800 million people are scraping by on less than $1.25 per day,” stressed Obama.
Obama went to state that global community is not in a position to become complacent with the accomplishments made in the last 15 years with the implementation of the MDGs. Under his administration, U.S.A, the largest development donor have committed and helped mobilize more than $100 billion dollars to the areas of health, food and security.
Many leaders at the summit stressed upon the fact that the world had now become much more divided then it was only 3 decades ago. If the global community is actually serious about achieving the SDGs by 2030, then efforts towards peace and harmony must be established as well.
