Six people were reported to have been killed and eight others wounded since Monday morning in the latest epidemic of bloody violence amid the third-largest city in the United States.
Chicago Police Department issued data that described the outbreak of gun violence as Chicago suffers a 21% rise in homicides and a 20% increase in non-fatal shooting incidents till now in the year 2015. The current shooting took place in the city’s South and West sides, which specially have gone through a vast majority violence in the city.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel voiced outrage on Tuesday, blaming the surge in violence on the availability of too many guns on the streets of Chicago and weaker gun laws. He said that it is high time that our criminal justice system and the laws that govern the access to guns and the punishments for using them (in crimes) echo the morals of the people of the city of Chicago.
Deputy Chief Eugene Roy informed that the gunfire slayed two women and wounded three others –which comprises an 11-month old boy – while they were returning home from a family outing around 7:15 p.m. on Monday. The outing was held in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side.
Just before the shooting, a car pulled off in front of the family as they were getting out of their own vehicle, and multiple suspects opened fire on them. Police are still unaware of the cause to why the family was targeted. The women who were lethally shot, was a 24-year-old Patricia Chew and 46-year-old Lolita Wells. They were the wounded child’s mother and grandmother.
Roy reported that within minutes, two generations of that infant’s family were wiped out. A police officer who rushed to the scene took the boy to a nearby hospital, where he was registered in stable condition. There were two other men, both 25, who also suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The two women were pronounced dead inside the hospital. Relatives came in and identified the mother as Chew, the grandmother as Wells, and the boy as Princeton Chew. The name of the two wounded men were not released.
Lolita was shot from behind her back,” stated Williams, a nurse who delivered first aid to the victims. In the beginning Lolita seemed all right, but then she faded out. To make it even worst, authorities informed that Patricia was two months pregnant.
