Attorney General Brad Schimel said on Thursday that the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s report on the 19 year old biracial male, who was unarmed at the time when a white Madison police officer shot him, will be sent to prosecutors in a fortnight.
Schimel said that the final report shall not be inclusive of proposal on District Attorney Ismael Ozanne of Dane County District filing charges against the officer.
At a news conference, Schimel said, “I’m not here as a prosecutor. The Dane County district attorney will have a very important decision to make. We will work hard to get the information to him as expeditiously as we can.”
The police have reported that on Friday evening, Officer Matt Kenny after responding to a report on a man who has assaulted numerous people and was running in the middle of the traffic. Kenny found his way to an apartment where Robinson had gone following some sounds of disturbance and was attacked by Robinson. The shooting has triggered days of protests.
Wisconsin has passed a law in 2014 which requires outside agencies investigating deaths involving officers, thus the state Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation is carrying out the procedure.
Details of the case are not being shared as publicizing information related to racially charged officer involved shooting has caused mayhem in the past.
Division Administrator Dave Matthews has requested the public to be calm and patient while emphasizing how big the investigation process is.
Almost 30 agents, analysts and supervisors are involved in working on this case. Investigators have conducted a minimum of 60 interviews asking questions like what every eye witness including Kenny were up to prior to the shooting; to a level where how long they have slept the previous night was also in question.
“We don’t get a chance to redo this type of investigation,” he said.
Agents are investigating video recordings from squad cars which arrived after the shooting incident along with devices carried by others. According to Matthew, the time it will consume to go through all the recordings is daunting.
Schimel has stated that he would like Ozanne to go through the preliminary autopsy report before making them public.
