Shell’s request to extend restraining order against Greenpeace has been granted U.S District judge on this Friday.
Shell originally filed an injunction against Greenpeace after activists illegally boarded the Polar Pioneer back in April, while the vessel was going to the Chukchi Sea. The original injunction order, handed down by District Judge Sharon L. Gleason, gave 3 of Shell’s vessels ‘immunity’ from Greenpeace members and any other associates connected with the non-government organization. The new extension in the restraining order added 27 more vessels (includes both oil rigs and sea-vessels), facilities owned by Shell, ramp lots and a few Ravn Alaska hangers.
The extension in this restraining order means that all personnel (comprehensive term that includes all agents, officers, attorneys, employees, etc.) of Greenpeace Inc. (aka Greenpeace USA) and any and all others who are in active participation with the non-government organization will be barred from both trespassing on Shell property and preventing others from moving about freely in these facilities. The restraining order further bars Greenpeace personnel from engaging in any sort of activities that might disrupt the regular operations of Shell.
Not surprisingly, Shell was ecstatic regarding the decision and their spokesman, Megan Baldino said the following in an official statement. “We’re pleased the judge recognized the risk posed by Greenpeace’s illegal activities, including the boarding of the Polar Pioneer drill rig in April. “We don’t want a repeat of previous illegal stunts; they jeopardize the safety of the people working on board and the protestors themselves.”
Although Greenpeace representatives were not available for any comments, it can be reasonably safe to assume that the organization will not go down without a fight. These two organizations have a long history and many believe that Shell often uses their massive monetary backing to leverage case decisions in their favor.
Given Shell’s track record with controversies and scandals, which are plenty, and the fact that the world is waking up to the eminent threat of Global Warming, it remains to be seen for how long the world will choose to remain silent while these giant corporations are getting ‘away with murder’.
