On a 90-minute interview with the Republican presidential candidate for 2016, Ted Cruz, he had been asked how he would deal with violence in taking place in Baltimore following Freddie Gray’s suspicious death under the custody of police, an event which has gained the attention of people worldwide.
Cruz responded, “President Obama, when he was elected, he could have been a unifying figure. He’s made decisions that I think have inflamed racial tensions — that have divided us rather than bringing us together.”
The interview had been held with the president and chief executive of the U.S Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Javier Palomarez and it was apparent that this was Cruz’s attempt to reach out to the Hispanic community.
When asked directly by Palmaoarez, that too twice on “what solution he would propose as the president for bringing down the racial tensions in America?” Cruz made vague comments on the need for changes in the criminal justice system which arrested minorities at higher rates that whites and eventually his discussion drifted to ‘vilification of law enforcement.’ It was evident that he used this chance for mostly insulting President Obama
Cruz said, “He has exacerbated racial misunderstanding, racial tension, from back at the beer summit to a series of efforts to pit Americans against each other.” He even tried blaming the Baltimore situation, by digging up an old quote that VP Joe Biden said while campaigning that if Obama lost, then the Republicans will “put you back in chains.” Cruz said, “That is deliberately dividing and inflaming tensions.”
Cruz had been asked to specifically to elaborate how Obama has been responsible for ‘inflaming tensions’ and he replied without any real content, “He has not used his role as president to bring us together. He has exacerbated racial misunderstandings, racial tensions.”
Palomarez has been asked after the interview of his opinion on Cruz, and he respectfully gave Cruz credits for his effort to reach out and connect with the Hispanic population but he also mentioned about Cruz’s lack of solutions and said, “The real question was what would he as president do, not what does he think President Obama has done wrong.”
