While a lot of people that want to stream content to their televisions from their mobile devices are used to casting with the help of Google’s Chromecast, Amazon has now released its own tool which will let users fling content on the Fire TV.
This Fling software toolkit has been launched by the company which will allow anyone who is using Android, FireOS or iOS to make photos, music or videos sharable on the Fire TV.
This SDK is cross-platform and enables mobile developers to develop rich multi-screen experiences on Fire TV. The statement also said that their SDK will allow users to fling media to Fire TV and use two-way communication to create engaging 2nd screen experiences between mobile apps and Fire TV.
Whenever users open apps which support Fling, they will see the icon appear. Simply tapping the icon will see the content being sent to the Fire TV. What’s even more interesting though is that users may just be able to enjoy multi-screen experiences here. This is something which Google is still developing with Chromecast. But it will be the developers who have to ultimately grasp this opportunity to, for example, allow users to use their phones as controllers for games they are playing on the television.
There are a number of apps on the Fire TV already which allow users to play games and view content. It is just like what Roku and Apple TV is offering and users will be able to access stuff like HBO and Netflix through this device too. Basically, developers could really take advantage of Fling.
This release makes Amazon a serious competitor for the likes of Google and Apple, not that it wasn’t already a competitor. It seems like the battle for control of our living rooms has begun. Amazon has already made waves with the Echo as far as connected home devices are concerned. But what does the future hold?
