A new study reveals that binge drinking elevates the risk of heart attack by 70%. The team of researchers who conducted the study has also reported that risk is actually much greater at the start of a binge drinking session. It has also been confirmed that reports published in the past also reveals that binge drinking can increase the blood pressure during the first hour of the session.

The study says that the risk is actually much higher for the one who do not drink on weekdays and then binge over the weekend. As one would expect, binge drinking vodka, gin or whiskey makes the risk of heart attack much higher in comparison to drinking beer and wine, due to the percentage of alcohol content in them. The team also mentioned that an individual who drinks a small quantity of alcohol regularly could deflect away the chances of a cardiac arrest and potentially be benefitted from it in many ways as well.

According to the team at Harvard School of Public Health in Boston Massachusetts, a drinker has the possibility of suffering from heart disease on the basis of the amount of alcohol consumed daily. They have also noted that individuals who drink only occasionally and then go binge drinking are also more at risk.

Numerous scholarly teams from the US, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands participated in this research and incorporated all their work to come to a conclusion. The history of 4,000 victims of cardiac arrests had been analyzed by researchers. Each individual has been interviewed on the amount of alcohol consumed as well as the specific kind they consumed. The outcome showed that the risk of having a heart attack is actually 72% on the first hour of the binge drinking. The risk of heart attack then begins to come down after the third hour of the session. The “most crucial period” for the occasional drinkers who suddenly decide on binging is the ‘first hour’ of the drinking session.

To conclude the research team has said that “habitual moderate alcohol consumption is associated with a lower risk of heart attacks, whereas binge drinking is associated with higher cardiovascular risk.”
