The King of the Ring tournament is back and instead of it being a part of Monday Night RAW, the WWE is trying to give it a life of its own with a special King of the Ring telecast on Tuesday the 28th of April 2015 where all the semifinal matches are going to take place. After quarterfinal matches on Monday Night Raw between Dolph Ziggler and Bad News Barrett, R-Truth and Stardust, Sheamus and Dean Ambrose and Neville and Luke Harper, the semifinal card has Barrett facing R-Truth while Sheamus has to deal with Neville.
Now there was a time when the King of the Ring had a pay-per-view of its own but it hasn’t been mentioned for the last five years. The most notable King of the Ring winner has got to be Stone Cold Steve Austin however there have been many other big names to win the tournament as well. This is a terrific way for the WWE to generate some interest while allowing someone from the middle of the card to shine.
There was some quality ringwork on show during the WWE RAW quarterfinal matches but poor bookings meant that two well know heels as well as two relatively unknown baby faces are in the semifinals. The WWE should at least have to sense to allow one heel and one baby face to progress from here or the finals aren’t going to generate as much hype as they would have imagined. At the same point of time, R-Truth has been severely underutilized in the WWE and considering how he proved time and time again that he was an A-lister while in TNA I don’t see why the WWE isn’t pushing him higher already. Maybe this is his shot? On the other hand is Neville, the former NXT champion. He’s hardly spent any time in the WWE and has already got the fans behind him as an underdog. Who is going to win this tournament? Guess we’ll just have to wait till tonight to see.
