There are many people around today who believe that boxing’s dead or at least a dying art. But the belief that this sport is now irrelevant is not fair nor is it true. The belief that the UFC has dealt a killer blow to this important part of American culture is hard to argue with.
But the matchup between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao may be just what was needed to change all of this. All these competitors need to do is give us a fight that is just as epic and compelling as the amount of hype and anticipation which precedes it. The big question however remains. Can these two boxers really do it?
Just think of how much has been put into this fight even before the first bell rings. There have been years of debate on whether they will actually square off or not. The rumors about this mega fight just keep on coming. And now, these two unbelievable athletes are finally going to match up in the squared circle. Both boxers are clearly past their prime already and though Mayweather may not be showing it, Pacquiao definitely looks like his best years are behind him. If this fight does turn out to be a dud, the only way it is going to be remembered is as the matchup that happened a few years too late. And there are going to be a lot of disappointed people as well.
This is going to be the fight between the undefeated publicist Mayweather and the politician Pacquiao. Both boxers have enough fans around their fingers to fill up every seat in every arena, stadium or bar where the fight is broadcast. Some will be there to root for Pacquiao, others will be there to root against Mayweather. Pacquiao certainly hasn’t missed any opportunities as far as making Mayweather look like the villain are concerned. They are billing the fight as “Good against evil” with God being on Pacquiao’s side.
Irrespective of anything else, young fans are certainly going to learn a thing or two about the sweet science of boxing from Mayweather and pure power from Pacquiao.
