Off the shore of Maui Hawaii, a woman, 65, died in a shark attack on Wednesday, authority said.
According to the statement of Maui Fire Department, the woman had been found unresponsive by snorkelers about 200 yards from the shore and therefore had been taken to the beach at a surfing area. The paramedics tried lifesaving efforts but did not succeed in it.
The injuries that the victim sustained had been on her torso and it suggested that she had been attacked by a shark, as stated by the fire officials.
The attack had taken place in the Kanahena Cove area of Ahini-Kinau Area Reserve on Maui as per the statements of the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources.
First deputy director of state Department of Land and Natural Resources, Kekoa Kaluhiwa, said at a news conference in Honolulu that the incident is currently under investigation. He also said that the staff would be posting additional signage along the coast.
He said, “Our condolence goes out to the family of the victim.”
The water has been cleared by the crews with the help of jet skis and the Department of Land and Natural Resources has taken the initiative of closing the area for the swimmers, divers and other ocean activities. The area will be closed until noon Thursday.
There had been no reported witness of the shark attack. This has been the first such deadly encounter in Hawaii this year.
Until Wednesday, there had been only 3 confirmed fatal shark attacks in blue waters of Hawaii since 1995, but all three of those occurred off the coast of Maui, according to Department of Land and Natural Resources records.
On Dec. 2, 2013, Fisherman Patrick Brinley had been killed by an unknown species of shark while fishing from a kayak off the coast of Makena, and on Aug. 14, 2013, Jana Lutteropp, a German tourist, died after a shark bit off her arm while she has been snorkeling in Makena, according to state records.
In a 2004 shark attack, a surfer also died off the coast of Maui, according to state records.
