For one too many years, Americans have been mesmerized by Dr. Oz appearing on television, discussing health issues. Dr. Mehmet Oz is a cardiothoracic surgeon, and appointed as the Vice Chairman of the department of surgery at the Columbia University. He is the most popular American doctor there ever was and whenever he appointed a new diet plan or health exercise practice, his loyal fans and followers followed it blindly.
On this matter, all the other contemporary doctors are against his because no matter what advice he gives on national television has been called as miracles by him. His theories therefore had to be tested by 10 physicians selected from all over the world, and to not so surprisingly; they have said that he must be dismissed from his position as the vice chairman. Dr. Oz on the other hand retaliated using the television platform as his defense, saying he wants to tell the world that miracles do happen and he wants to set up a record.
Just last week, the United States of America has appointed Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, although from what it appears, not even half the population of America knows Dr. Murthy and about his impeccable experience as a surgeon.
50 years ago, there was another iconic doctor, Dr. Luther L. Terry, who had been the first surgeon general issued who has reported that smoking has links to cancer. This act by him led to smoking being banned in some countries and even advertisements of smoking being prohibited. Warnings in the front and back of the smoking packages have also been issued in the cigarette packets because of his act.
Dr. Murthy said, “He wants to lead a country to a new prosperous way of country. We have to improve our institutions in order to deal with a number of diseases.”
The first steps that he has already taken with the public service announcement had been on the significance of childhood vaccines. People believe what they see on television, maybe it is time to stop believing in T.V. advertisement and appoint Dr. Murthy as the next America’s Doctor instead of Dr. Oz, who has been involved in cases taking bribes from drug pharmaceuticals to promote their products instead of showing the Americans the right way.
Will Dr. Murthy be able to be the next American Doctor leading the way of American lives into making healthy choices? Only time will say so.
