Three people have been killed by a fire which may have started by a Molotov cocktail on Saturday morning at a tire shop located in South El Monte, according to the reports of fire officials.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Grace Medrano, when firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after the report of the accident before dawn at Cheque Tires at 1252 Santa Anita Ave., they have found at least one of the victims has survived.
Medrano said, “When firefighters arrived, they saw a man behind heavily locked gates trying to escape the fire. They tried to rescue him but couldn’t reach him before he was overcome by his injuries.”
Medrano said officials have not been able to determine the age or gender of the other two victims whose bodies had been discovered after the blaze had been extinguished by the firefighters.
Homicide and arson investigators are working alongside each other in order to determine if the blaze had been set up intentionally or not.
Medrano said that the 911 caller who had made the call reporting the fire mentioned that he saw someone throwing a Molotov cocktail inside the tire shop. She has also said that other witnesses have reported seeing a white Chevrolet Silverado leaving the scene at the time of the fire.
Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman Robert Diaz reported that one of the firefighter had been treated and released from a local hospital as he suffered burns to his face while working on the scene.
