Certain emoji enthusiasts believe that there is always enough room for new icons on their keyboard.

Taco Bell is the one who is leading the charge to get a taco emoji. There are a number of other publications which have suggested emoji’s of their own. There are more than 15000 supporters from the redhead community that are also campaigning for representation through Change.org.

Jeremy Burge, an emoji aficionado as well as the founded of Emojipedia, has started a campaign known as World Emoji Day that was on the 17th of July.

He also launched something called “an experiment in Emoji democracy” through Reddit which is a campaign to get new pictograms.

He wants everyone to vote on the next icon which will be added to emoji keyboards is going to be. Some of the current contenders include a rainbow flag, a taco and strips of bacon.

This campaign, however, doesn’t mean that the suggestions are going to be added. Emoji’s are currently regulated by the Unicode Consortium which looks at creating universal infrastructure which operates across multiple languages and platforms. From their list of approved emoji’s, phone manufacturers can choose what their users can use.

Anyone can submit proposals for new characters. There are a number of things they consider with emoji’s including compatibility and expected usage. Some suggestions part of this vote are already choices for consideration. The choices are going to be announced in June 2016.

Others such as the taco have already been approved by Unicode but isn’t available to users yet. Some just don’t make it that far. For example, out of the 230 emoji’s made available in 2014, only 1 was added to the iPhone.

Earlier in the year, Unicode worked together with Apple for adding 300 emoji’s focused on diversity once criticism spiked about a lack of black emoji’s. 5 other skin color options were also made available along with 32 new country flags & families having same-sex parents.
