UFC strips Jon Jones of his lightweight championship after his arrest in hit-and-run case

Jon “Bones” Jones, the MMA champion was earlier stripped of his UFC title and also suspended indefinitely. This harsh decision comes immediately after he was arrested in as part of an investigation of a hit-and-run accident in New Mexico that left one pregnant woman injured.

The 27 year old Jones turned himself into the Albuquerque police on Monday & was booked by the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center as per the official statement of the police. Jones later got out on bond, and made an appearance in court on Tuesday to face the felony charge of leaving an accident scene where personal injury was caused.

The statement issued by the Ultimate Fighting Championship on Tuesday said that they believe their athletes need to maintain “certain standards” both inside and outside the Octagon.

As per the arrest warrant of the police, the 30 year old woman is currently dealing with a broken arm and sprained wrist after Jones allegedly banged his silver Buick SUV into a red Honda on Sunday morning. After this, Jones allegedly fled the scene of the crime on foot and entered a gated community.

A police officer, who was off duty at the time, was near the crash site at the time of the accident and noticed the Buick’s driver who bore an astonishing resemblance to Jones. He said that he watched UFC regularly and knew exactly what Jon Jones looked like.

There was a marijuana pipe loaded with marijuana in the car as well as rental documents proving that Jones had rented the car in his name.

Jones, currently residing in Albuquerque, was the light heavyweight champion of UFC prior to his title being officially stripped from him on Tuesday. He was supposed to defend this title against Anthony Johnson at UFC 187 on the 23rd of May in LA but is not anymore. As per the UFC the title fight is now going to be between Daniel Cormier and Johnson. Jones is currently not returning any calls for comments although he did mention on Twitter that he was sorry for letting his fans down.
