The NFL’s been dealing with traumatic head injuries for quite a while now since most players have a history of abuse. Studies have also shown a relation between head injuries & abuse. Studies are also showing that head injuries may be related to brain disease as well like chronic traumatic encephalopathy called CTE.
The NFL has never considered concussions and head injuries seriously. This fact is unfortunate and been brought to the attention of everyone because of the new Will Smith movie, Concussion. The movie is about a neuropathologist from Nigeria who discovered CTE in Sep 2002.
The NFL is doing a good job when it comes to covering up their neglect to head injuries & concussions. The seriousness of these concussions is now being revealed by scientific evidence.
As per Yahoo Sports, researchers from the Department of Veteran Affairs & Boston University researched 91 brains of ex-NFL players & found that 87 of the players had positive results for CTE. So 95.6 % of the players tested positive for a disease linked to depression, dementia and suicide.
The lab found CTE in a total of 131 from 165 people who, before dying, played football either in high school, in college, semi-professionally or professionally.
According the CNN, Frontline says that 40% of the players that tested positive were either offensive or defensive linemen.
A NFL spokesman said that they are dedicated to trying to make football safer & will continue taking steps to try and protect their players including changing rules, improving sideline technology & expanding medical resources.
But the question still remains, is the NFL finally taking CTE seriously or is all of this just a façade.
