Plankton is a key factor in the emergence of a bright cloud that can be seen above the Southern Ocean. The bright cloud formation process seems to start from a collection of small organisms that produce gas as part of the metabolism and ultimately encourage the creation of a cloud droplet formation. This phenomenon is able to help answer a question that has long circulated in various scientific communities about how the appearance of the clouds is before the industrial era on Earth. Recent research from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and University of Washington tried to answer this phenomenon and with this study, they are most likely can find the answer completely soon.
This study took a sample of research on the relationship between plankton that live in the Southern Ocean and the relationship above the bright cloud formations there. According to Robert Wood, a professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of Washington, so far observations in the Southern Ocean appear quite minimal when this region is probably the most pristine area that still can be found in this industrial era. This study focused on the ability of plankton to produce gas which can form a cloud formation that is able to increase the level of reflection of sunlight. Cloud formation’s ability of the reflection of sunlight is two times greater than the cloud formation that is not affected by the gas plankton. That’s the fact that proves the effect of gas produced from plankton’s activities.
According to the researchers, the ability of plankton in shaping the cloud formations lies in two important mechanisms, namely emission of dimethyl sulfide and the plankton itself as carried by the wind upward to increase the organic composition of bright cloud formations.Dimethyl sulphide is responsible for the scents of sulfur that are sometimes found in the ocean. It is necessary to stress once again that the position of the Southern Ocean is very important for research related to the level of purity of the environment. This study listed in the Science Advances journal on July 17th and has attracted big attention of many environment researchers.
