Shawn Michaels Wanted to Quit WWE for WCW

In an interview with Jim Ross, WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels revealed that he wanted to quit WWE and switch over to WCW. Throughout Shawn Michael’s illustrious career at WWE, never once did the fans get a whiff of the possibility that the legend might make a move to WCW. Michaels talked about a lot of interesting things on the Ross Report, especially regarding his upcoming book. However the highlight of the interview was undoubtedly the portion where Michaels revealed how former WWE Chairman, Vince McMahon prevented him from making the ‘disastrous’ move.

“I thought about it. But there’s two things — I went to Vince [McMahon] and said, ‘Let me go. I’m miserable here. I wanna go down and be with my buddies.’”

Chairman, Vince McMahon however refused to let him go, stating that Michaels was legally bound with WWE and was under contract. Hence the switch-over was not possible.

“He (Vince) said, ‘You’re a creative guy. Once you get past being angry and it comes to working, you want to do things your way. They (WCW) won’t let you do that down there, and that’s going to kill you. They’ll kill the one thing about this business you enjoy.’ I think he had some validity there.”

Michaels revealed that he was desperate and tried to convince Vince McMahon to let him go, on multiple occasions. The Chairman of WWE had a much cooler temperament than Shawn Michaels and eventually convinced him to stay put.

Vince McMahon reiterated the fact that once Michaels cools down, he will be able see past his anger towards WWE and realize that staying here will serve his best interest both for his career and for WWE as an entertainment industry.

The various problems (drugs and alcohol) surrounding Shawn Michaels during that time didn’t help him either in being able to make clear decisions. On top of that WCW offered a pretty lucrative deal to persuade Michaels to make the switch-over.

Vince McMahon played a significant role in preventing what could have been one of the biggest disaster in WWE’s history. Guess we owe the former Chairman a long over-due “Thank You” for letting us witness the ‘Sweet Chin Music’.
